Yeah, cool story about the headstand.
I started doing headstands on boards back in 1981. My board was 4'6" and by far, the craziest thing I did on the board wasn't double flips or anything... just a headstand while inside of a tube at Kaiser. Those were the days. :woohoo:

Cool, thanks.
Merv is not paddling surfskis anymore due to back
issues, but, he's still charging on a recumbent bicycle.

Get real. DW SUP paddling is 10x harder than on a Surfski. Imagine whatever you do on your ski doing it standing up.
Flat water is tougher too, at least trying to go fast.
Unless you try for yourself, you have no idea - nor any credibility in your opinion about it...

Ps: for anyone finding it amusing that are different, specific, types of boards, I suggest that they try downwinding in a K1 sometime.

I guess our opinion will differ.
Downwind: very different fun, but it is usually a little easier on a surfski.
Upwind: more fun on saurfski, and way more easier on a surfski.
Sidewind: super fun on a surfski, and easier on a surfski.
Flat water: way more fun on a SUP, and so much easier on a SUP
Long Distance: way more fun on a SUP, and so much easier on a SUP

Using the technique below, I can paddle straight for 6 hours or 45km without thinking twice.

Ok, looking at your pic on your starboard I understand where people perspectives could differ - I am 6'5" and weigh 102.5kg; mostly above the waist. I find upright paddling a challenge, and I expect that my elevated center of (much greater) gravity may have something to do with it.
As such I am prepared to admit that some of my previous comments on the topic were somewhat exaggerated and should be taken with a bit of salt - and some sense of humor ;)

I am about 1/2 your heights and 1/2 your weight

Keep in mind that I use a board that is quite unusual: it's nearly 18 feet long, and only 22.5 inches in width, so there's plenty of glide to enjoy. Judging from your weight, I hope you have made the leap away from a 10 foot board that doesn't glide well on the flats.

Clearly, and without a doubt, I benefit from a longer board, but truth be told, you would greatly benefit from a 16-19 foot board with about 26 or 27 inches in width. It may change your entire outlook on the sport of SUP, and provide a much better glide for you.

Hi mate. I disagree strongly, sorry.

Paddling a surf ski is far more efficient, width being the main reason, wind resistance being another. Sustainable speeds are much higher in a ski period.

I have 4 SUPs, 1 ski. And even as a fairly new surfskier - read wobbly and poor technique (but getting better!) - the above applies.

I never said that SUP was more efficient, because it's physically impossible (read pure physics) ahahah

The reference that I made was that SUP on flat water was more fun (good for the sole) and easier (good for the body) - but it's cool if you disagree to that.

That's interesting! There's been a women "rowing" a very similar looking craft out of my local harbor. Word has it she is training for a crossing from CA to Hawaii.
Her craft looks terribly and painfully inefficient and slow. Incredible amount of wind-age.
Wish her/them the best of luck though.

Thats why those ocean rowing boats only do downwind ocean crossings generally. In fact some of the most successful designs were done by a British racing dinghy designer - Phil Morrison - and have a deliberately exaggerated accomodation bit to add to the windage.

at fath2o, google "rowing across" then click on images ...
wonder how a surfski would look like when used for the same purpose ...

Yeah, somebody mentioned that the design is for downwind performance. But, I believe it is long way to the Tradewinds from west coast of CA.
Give those folks a lot of credit.

Just can't help but think some kind of lightweight low profile very streamlined displacement hull might be a better option? Maybe store more supplies below the waterline near the center?
But what do I know!

fath2o,
yep, a lot of stuff above the waterline that should be under it. Gaya suggested that too I guess by turning it upside down

Here's a positive thought about SUP:
When it ocean is a little "too calm", when you still can't quite take your flat water Olympic style K1, when you are NOT going to go paddling because you fear you're gonna get bored, that's when you definitely want to reach and grab your SUP for cross-training. Nothing boring about it.
