SHARK BITE AT HONEYMOON ISLAND

DUNEDIN ? It?s not what you are thinking! Though known for its large numbers of sharks, there has not been any shark attacks on beautiful Honeymoon Island State Park. BUT there is one scheduled for Saturday April 19th!

The Shark Bite Challenge Kayak and Canoe Race will be held on Saturday, April 19th, in conjunction with the Island Earth Days Celebration at Honeymoon Island State Park. The race will be held from the newly improved beach, and invites a variety of paddlers from novice to serious. Participants have an option of paddling in the 4-mile or 8-mile courses, and will compete in their designated age, gender, and boat categories. The Shark Bite Challenge is expected to attract numerous paddlers, some who are in training for world class events and other who are just looking for a fun challenge. All types of paddle-craft are welcome, including kayaks, canoes, surfskis, outrigger canoes, and paddleboards. The $25 race fee includes a T-shirt, lunch, and entertainment at the Island Earth Days Celebration. The race starts at 10 a.m., with a race meeting at 9:45 a.m. All proceeds from the race benefit the Friends of the Island Parks, a citizen support organization that supports Caladesi and Honeymoon Island State Parks.

Honeymoon Island State Park is located at 1 Causeway Blvd, Dunedin, FL 34698. Registration for the race is available online at www.active.com, or in person on race day. For more information, call race director Karen Mirlenbrink, at 727-510-3493.
