somthing i like to do is when the stuff hits you the wrong way is, just before you go over the top give it half or 3/4 rudder. ( that way you won't be hit completly side on.)

Another thing I've found helpful when going crosswind in strong winds is to flatten out my stroke, so that the wind's effect on the paddle is reduced.

(I know that some paddlers reduce the length of their paddle too in hectic conditions when they have to go upwind. I guess everything that brings your centre of gravity inwards is good when the sea is rough!)

Thanks Rob for the advice. When I was out on Saturday the SW picked up in False Bay and I could feel the effect on the paddles.
