I now see how my example was a really poor choice. Not long after that post I had a very bad day on the water now that I look at the timestamp.
I also didn't account for "nonswimmers" who paddle on my comment.
Here you have to swim 500 and then stay floating for 5 mins to be allowed to paddle a boat. It doesn't apply to individual boats, but all individual boat owners paddle the 4 man boat, which do require the swimming test. If you don't pass the test then the Canal Administration won't let the club sign you up as a member.
