Video of the Week: Downwind Dash thru big surf

A Cape Town summer institution is the Downwind Dash on Wednesday evenings - around 10km from Milnerton to Big Bay, Blouberg...  When the Atlantic swell is running big, it can be "interesting" both to launch and to survive at Big Bay!

Richard Kohler

The man who started the Downwind Dash is paddling legend Richard Kohler...  He put in a mere guest appearance yesterday because he's been busy doing something else: paddling around the entire South African coast to raise money for charity - for "Paddling for Smiles" to be precise.

It's an awesome project - the money all goes to repairing childrens' cleft palates - and changing their lives for the better for ever.

To find out more about this, check out the Paddling for Smiles Facebook Page.

Downwind Dash Video

Here's the story of Wednesday's Downwind Dash written by "The Great Adventurer".

In the video below you'll see Richard Kohler and his driver, Kevin Goodspeed:

  • negotiating line after line of surf at the start
  • enjoying some fabulous runs in the open ocean
  • navigating their way into Big Bay after waiting for a huge set to come through...!

Enjoy!
