Since my better half comes from SA we try to visit relatives once a year. Next December I will spend 3 weeks in Cape Town, will probably rent a house in Hout Bay since we like that area. Last visit I never got around to go paddling but this year I would love to do some surfski paddling, been hearing alot about the "in"famous Millners run. So my question is who should I contact and where is the best areas to paddle around december ? Id like to take lessions, do races, pratice ins and out as well as just playing around in the wave. Been paddling for around 2 years now and at home I paddle an Epic v12 and a Fenn Swordfish and I can handle myself in most conditions (that we get), although we dont have anything like the waves around Cape Town. Would like to paddle with a group of people afew days a week :)

Sounds great, you will be welcome here!

I'm sure Rob will have some good advice for you, but December is the time of the Cape Point Challenge, and we will have many foreigners hanging out in Fish Hoek for the month.

Daily Millers Runs & paddling sessions, both social and training.

Generally its a month-long surfski party there. For you staying in Hout Bay, that's close enough.

Next trip down to SA planned, we rented a house in Hout Bay for two weeks around 15-30 Dec so can easily drive down to Fish Hoek from there.

My background is multisports and adventure racing for years, paddling 2-3 times per week in a Fenn Swordfish or Epic v14 on choppy waters at home, dont have any experienced in big ocean conditions , so perhaps going in a double would be a good option as my first Millers runs.

My plan is to paddle 2-3 days per week preferably in the morning with other people that know the area and can help me rent a skit etc. If theres some local surfskiraces I would love to attent, any help on who to contact is very appriciated :) ?

You are there over the period of the Cape point challenge, and the week of downwind paddling before that.

Perfect timing. If I was you, I'd enter the Cape Point, and then do that week of miller runs before it. It's an organized event, so there are safety boats etc.

Just arrive fit. 50km is a LONG way.

Only just saw this now...

You've come to the right place!

There will be races on Tuesday night in Hout Bay - great vibe, 10km race in the bay, prize-giving and post-mortems and lots of beer at the sailing club afterwards.

Seadog races in Fish Hoek very Friday night - also a great vibe, 6km or thereabouts round the cans at the FH Sailing Club.

Plenty of people doing Millers Runs.

You should try to hook up with some people doing the Milnerton to Melkbos run too - different conditions to the Millers Run, in some ways more pleasant (the waves are cleaner, smoother) but also a tad more dangerous in that the wind blows slightly offshore and the water is very cold. You want to be escorted for your first one...

Anyway - give us a shout (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.), it would be great to paddle with you. We have a group that paddles in Hout Bay and Fish Hoek, but you'll find plenty of other people to go with while we poor mortals go to work each day!

I also have V10 Double and if you like I would happily take you for your first Millers Run!

Wow awesome Rob! I will check the dates when we are in Cape Town and then email you so we can plan some paddling. I keen on doing the local races, just need to rent a suitable ski for the period. Im paddling a swordfish in all conditions here in Sweden, and a v14 on flat /small condition days but perhaps renting something more stable or atleast first try and see how I do in a Swordfish.

I just called Dawid Mocke too - I suggest you contact him reasonably soon as he could rent you a boat while you're here.

He is also doing downwind camps over that period and that might also be a fun thing to do. You can get hold of him at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

Cheers
