Very intrigued and I must admit: I would have to try the OSS skis to form an opinion.

I'd like to point something out though, regarding previous comments:
In 1988, a very popular ski in Hawaii (winning the Molokai crossing over and over) was the Chalup Ski (yes, designed by Oscar). This ski was unusual: it had LESS rocker and more "piercing" than any other boats available in Hawaii.

The comments it got was amazingly negative, yet, it was "THE" winning machine.

In 1989, the Predator (from the same shop) came about and was ready for the Molokai Channel. It had a tremendous amount of rocker. It wasn't faster, it didn't pierce through waves. The Predator resulted in being a lot of fun on downwind runs.

My point is that the OSS may not be for everyone, it may be faster, it may even be slower in certain conditions, but NO ONE will ever know without trying one out first (heavy paddlers / light paddlers). The fact that they are willing to think outside "the box" is worth opening a bottle of Breton Cider (we don't have Champagne here) ahahahah

I may be on a different boat, a different brand… but OSS is intriguing enough for me to open my eyes - and if I were representing another brand today, I'd tell OSS the same thing: "thanks for trying to be different and trying new things".

Interesting point about the Chalup Ski, though how would it compare to a 'modern' ski?

As for the negative comments, acceptance of innovations is as much social and aesthetic as it is based on performance. A clever idea that comes from the wrong person or that just looks too odd is often ignored. In the case of the weird looking boat I posted earlier; even though it's record suggests it works, nobody wants to admit it does as it's just too ugly!

Undoubtedly the proof of the ski is in the paddling, so getting to try an OSS will be interesting. Though we'll only really know if they get a few elite paddlers competing in them. It was interesting to watch the Worlds in Tahiti, with Fenn/Epic/Nelo/Think all contesting the podium, all with different design approaches. Suggests that no-one has come up with a superior solution so far and that it is still very much down to the paddler's wave selecting/riding ability. Would be really interesting to hear from some of the elite paddlers on what they feel works and what doesn't.

" it is still very much down to the paddler's wave selecting/riding ability"

To exclude the latter, one could use wave conditions common and reproducable for all and have all brands aligned in a test with clones of one and the same elite paddler ...

such a wave's there already:

The wave defining the speed? or do they allhave the same board? questions over questions ...

reg. FARR Yacht Design

on short distances, <=10k etc. in the flat, SUPs are becoming "frustratinlgy" fast for surfski paddlers it seems.

I wonder when the compromise between sit-on-top surfski and stand-up paddle board will become
to kneel down on such things > click: why not kneel-on-top here?

Yeah… SUP is a pretty cool form of paddling as well - and can be quite fast.
On a 31 km course (round trip), I averaged 9.4 km/h - on my SUP.
Granted: this is my fastest time to date on such a 3-hour course - on a SUP - because we can average more than 11 km/h on good downwind days.

For anyone who knows me, I am an older paddler, lacking muscle mass; this was "all" equipment: nearly 18' board, 24" wide, piercing bow designed for flat water, that does really well on downwind runs.

Yeah, equipment is getting better - in all domains.

I'm not sure whether it would be the worst of all worlds? Maybe the stand-up and sit-down forms of paddling are best for power transfer in their respective niches? If nothing else I can't imagine that the twisting for paddling (as opposed to the symmetrical two hand paddling thatis already done from a kneeling position) would do your knees any good over extended periods?

Nice vid of the tidal bore. We have one in the UK, has been on my to-do list to take the V7 and have a go! :)

Not unless you are trying to be stealthy :P

For those less technically savy, radar works by reflecting the radio waves back to the source, if you look at the ship there are no/very little vertical surfaces to reflect back to the source, the waves will bounce up and away from the ship. Pretty clever, but BUTT ugly from ex sailors point of view.

Always looking for the next boat :)

Successor of the code one called code 2.0, a hybrid reverse bow as the OSS from Ocean?

yes, it's the 2nd generation of the Code Zero which was Umberto's first surfski design ever.

The "hybrid" bow just works so well (proven with the OSS range) that Umberto Felci, the naval architect of the Code Zero and all OCEAN skis, uses it now for various applications including surfskis, outriggers (Divaa), yachts, etc.

We are convinced that this bow and hull design is the next generation for many marine applications - much more to come soon! Watch out!

One tiny mistake, to be a reverse bow it has to be under the waterline, not a reverse deck!

Hi Ranga,

we call them "hybrid" bows and they do perform differently from normal and from reverse bows.
Most paddles really appreciate how they do not nose dive like normal bows but pierce through waves (less bouncing)....

Cheers

There are a few reviews on the forum, just in different topics, e.g from AV_convert.
We did, as requested by some members of this forum, some changes to two ski models and are just finalising a new batch of skis. New reviews will be coming soon.

New, innovative, different!

After the Sprint Kayak Cinco, now the Canoe Six

Wondering if one would see a Nelo Surfski with a Cinco-like nose someday? Anyone?
