I see the article mentions that he did have a Garmin, so they should be able to deduce a fair amount about what happened eg whether he fell off at sea or tried to come in through the surf.

Type of PFD?
Leg leash?
Paddle leash?
Flare/s?

Kind of 'elephant in the room' stuff & very conscious of sensitivity.

Tragic loss... but what can we learn at least...?

The big question for any paddler... if you knew you were going to take a swim in the prevailing conditions - would you have paddled, & then tell us... what would you have made sure you had with you &/or done in advance??
