Spammers...

Made a slight mistake a few days ago.

Usually I have a good instinct about registrations - from the look of the email address used to register, you can tell pretty accurately if it's from a spammer.

You see, because we use email confirmation AND captcha, it's difficult for robots to get through the system, but almost every day I get people signing up manually, and then dropping spam about viagra or iphones and crap like that into the forum.

As you can imagine, it drives me nuts. Anyway, a guy called Marc registered a few days ago with a slightly unusual username and an email address from yahoo (a bad sign) that had seemingly random letters and numbers (usually a clear sign).

Earlier that day, I'd had a couple of definite spammers in the system and had cleared up the mess they left. So when I saw this one, I sent a reply email with two words, something I very seldom do.

Just this morning I got a reply from a bewildered Marc saying that he didn't understand why I'd said what I said, but offering it back! Ooops.

Anyway - if anyone else has mysteriously been deleted off the system or has even had a viciously rude email from me - apologies, chalk it up to the fight against spam and contact me to be reinstated!

And may the true spammers die writhing in never ending agony.

I'm still fighting the UK kitchen spammer on my GoPro User Forum Rob, impossible to even get this idiot to answer repeated emails.

Hi, I'm from Greece so the name I have and username I choose sound unusual (I have built a kayak ergometer named Tektamos and currently I'm building a wooden surfski intending to name it feve, names from Greek mythology) I'm glad that the misunderstanding is solved.

what platform is this forum built on?

While I'm not a forum spammer, I am an internet marketer, and know a bit more about this subject than the average paddler.

depending on the platform I may be able to sort you out a plugin that will not allow a new members 1st 5 or so posts to get published if they contain words from a list.
