Goals for 2012? was created by AR_convert
I have been challenged by my training group to put up some goals for 2012.

I know I want to be a consistent 12 km/hr + paddler (currently avg around 11.7-11.9) and am considering my options.

1. Coaching to improve technique
2. Gym sessions to improve strength.
3. Change from hybrid(12.7) to full carbon (9) Vault
4. Move to faster ski

Anyone else have goals for thier paddling in 2012?

Always looking for the next boat :)

Not break a boat again.
Be as lazy with the amount of time I work as possible.
Paddle every bloody day.

Get in the gym and get some strength back.

Figure out if it is hull shape or boat weight that is more important.
Finally decide on a new boat.

Think about the Hawkesbury classic.

1. Moving to the other side of the earth in April and buying a ski again. Just got a brand spanking new v12 ultra 2 months ago that'll have to stay here. At least this time I'll be spoiled for choice in Perth.

2. Meeting Sven.

3. Learning to talk funny.

After further reflection on these measures I reckon rather than doing all of them in quick succession I will start with coaching while in a familiar boat, get the technique right first.

I did some reading about speed stroke ergo meter last night, it can measure your power output. Does anyone know a coach/club/gym with one in Perth. This will give me an idea if I lack strength in my technique.

Once I have nailed technique and have a program to follow I see how this plays out speed wise.

Then I may be able to consider scratching what is becoming an annual itch for a new ski :)

Sell 1x kayak and 1x ski.
Win 39km kayak race Albany to Waiake beach.
Paddle around Waiheke Island (60km) in under 7 hours, last time took 7 hours 10mins in sea kayak.
Paddle out to Little Barrier Island, around and back, no landing available or allowed, 2x 25km open water crossings, 65-70km total, sea kayak.
Continue to improve my paddling technique, surf ski.

Also a 2 week paddling trip, perhaps Auckland to Great Barrier Island return as I did 2 years ago, or perhaps a coastal paddle of similar duration, unconfirmed trip as yet.

G'day Greg,
Mark here from EK, what's the route to cross from Auckland to the Barrier? Do you go across the Forth & across from Colville? I'm originally from Whitianga & a paddle from Auckland to the Barrier & then into Mercury Bay is on my list of things to do.
Mark.

Hi Mark

You can check out my story here from when I last did the trip.

203.86.194.7/Sites/kask/gems/PirateandMadam.pdf

Basically Auckland, cross the Firth of Thames and on to Fletchers Bay, cross over and circumnavigate, then return via Fletchers bay, back over the Firth. Goal wasn't speed, just have a good trip over a couple of weeks.

I planned to do a story with pics on my Facebook page but haven't got around to finishing it as yet, but the story be much the same as the link to the pdf.

Hoping to get over there again in March, similar thing but solo except for possible hook up with a group from Taranaki. Otherwise a paddle from Auckland to Whangamata.

Last year I did Auckland to just off the Mercury Islands, Kuaotuno and return. Was going to cross over too Great Barrier and return via Little Barrier to the East coast if conditions were favourable but the forecast changed daily and missed a good opportunity to do just that.

If you want to hook up for a trip such as you wish to do I'm dead keen.

That's cranking for flatwater, well done.

Racing the Doctor?

Thanks Stew, yes racing the Doctor and Mandurah Duel, but I tend to drop off compared to more experienced paddlers. Frustrating as I can't yet capitolise on my fitness to do well downwind, much to the delight of some locals over here :)

There's no substitute for spending time training downwind, and having spent the past few weeks on a road trip holiday with the family won't have helped

This summer will be more about learning how to race and develop some more runner catching skills.

Always looking for the next boat :)

Spot on mate. No substitute for time on the water. It's fortunate that being out there is so much fun.

Goals for 2012?

- Crack 44min for a Millers Run. (Current PB: 44:52)
- Get Joe Glickman here for this year's Cape World Cup, CPC and beat him on a Millers Run...
- Now that I'm convinced that I go faster on an intermediate ski, find the intermediate ski for me.
- Make the definitive Millers Run video
- Keep ahead of my mate Dale
- Do the 2012 Cape Point Challenge and feel strong at the end of it (and hence enjoy it for a change!)
- Do the Cape World Cup in December
- Do the Dragon Run again and radically improve my performance.
