width of seats was created by wintermutt
i just did 5 minutes of google searches, checked two surf ski manufacturer websites
and cannot find a single chart or mention of cockpit width.
this measurement would seem to me to be of some importance.
does anyone have a reference or chart with these numbers plotted?
specifically, what is the cockpit width of a huki wide seat option i will take cm or meters or inches whatever you got!
preferably the width about 1/2 way from the bottom to the top of the seat.
thank you.

Don't have that, but I think the way to measure width should be at a specified distance from the bottom of the bucket, where one's hip bones make their bottoms the widest. And second measurement near or at the top of the bucket, where the set sides are still usable or might be restricting.

Assuming the sides of the bucket are fairly flat (i.e., not concave or convex) between these points, one could estimate how it would feel for them without a pad or with their preferred thickness of seat pads.

Back in the days when I was building surf skis, we were able to provide a wealth of real info to potential customers. Today, boat prices are equivalent to prices of a used car and sometimes only provide 1 sentence of info.

Next, people will say that surf ski purchases are on the decline…
Could this be because not enough (accurate) info is provided new-comers?

By the same token, all surf skis have pros… and cons.
It would be nice to have manufacturers come up with a real list instead of saying that their new boat is "the best compromise", "the fastest yet", "the most efficient craft", etc… come on people: we want to give you some money, but let us make an intelligent conclusion based on truth.

Thanks for the thread. Indeed, there's some good info there. After a little bit of thinking, I have a message for all of today's manufacturers:
Please provide way more info on your websites and include:

- easy to find info
- clear concise pros & cons (what your boat was built for) - or tell us you completely guessed (but be honest).
- measurements: length, largest width, width from 1 meter from the bow, width from 1 meter from the bow, width of the largest part of the seat, height from 1 meter from the bow, height from 1 meter from the bow.
- Ideal paddler's weight
- detailled photos

Surely, many paddler will not care, or even understand all those measurements. But for those who cannot possibly try all surfskis (that would be all of us) this info would be vital in selecting our future ski.

Perhaps this is way too much info - but surely, there has to be a middle ground between what info is provided today and what info should be provided. Compromise, but don't threat us like idiots (even if I am one).

Stellar NZ does provide the width of their seats (actually the measurement is missing for the new SEI) but somewhere Stellar has stated that the seat is wider than the SEL, which is the reason I didn't bother to test paddle it as I knew it was going to be too big for me.
