Strength training for paddling?

Hey guys,
So I've been paddling about 8 months now and really loving it and now that I can stay upright (most of the time!) I'm trying to improve my speed and endurance. While there's still plenty of gains to be made from improved technique, I'm wondering about doing some weight training out of the boat too. Obviously the core stuff is very important (and I've found lots of info about that, but I'm keen to hear of other areas that people have found useful to work on? I'm a beanpole and come from a cycling/running background, so upper body brawn has never been my thing!

Also what about strength training to ensure muscle balance is maintained? I assume (hope!) that I'm getting stronger in those muscles used for paddling, but what about their opposite number that just get a free ride?

Thanks in advance guys.

Another thing our training group does about once a month/ 6 weeks is use hockey straps on our hulls. We did 9 x 5min @ 80% tonight and boy it hurt, the last effort was without the strap and we were flying :)

Always looking for the next boat :)
