On holiday in Plettenberg Bay last week I pitched up at the local time trial kitted out in my PFD, flares, leash and cellphone and boy did I feel like a bit of a tit. All the guys there were in paddle shorts and vests and I guess they would have been in speedos only if the weather had been sunny.

In Cape Town PFD's have become standard for any paddle, maybe it is because of the colder water and wild oceans.

PFDs are now compulsory for any race held under the auspices of NSSC/CSA in South Africa.

So we saw even the elite paddlers at the opening race of Billy's series all wearing PFDs...
