Thanks! I own the Barton DVD. I'm looking for something on the web and easier to share, so I can show a few beginners what good stroke looks like, (as opposed to mine).

Speaking of Hungary, Tim Brabants here training in Hungary 2007 pre-world champs. Different form of paddling for sure sprint K1 but brilliant power and technique here. Brabant won Gold K1 1000m and Silver 500m.

Just noticed another of Brabants' from way back. I know there are contestable aspects here - spearing paddle in and punching forward with upper arm, as well as nothing about leg drive, however some really good basics for me just watching torso rotation, upper arm height, entry, exit, angle from boat. Caught a shot of myself in recent race - images of hyperbole-and-a-half. All of the the wrong things going on, arm height too low, hands too close together, entry too short yada yada. Smartened me right up for next paddle and it has really helped. Point here is get some shots of yourself paddling and work on it. despite thinking I had reasonable technique I have some way to go. Still, maybe it's good just sometimes until I get tired ... That's what training is really.

If I want to marvel at the physical prowess of a K-1 sprint paddler, I watch the girls. Less upper body strength, more core-legs. Absolutely amazing skills/balance.

I'm a downwinder. Surfing ability will trump a good stroke all day long. Surf skill and a good stroke, well, that's what the pros can do. Watch Clint and Oscar just tick over, then extend the arms and engage the legs if they need more power. Lower hands are ok. Shorter paddles are ok.

Beginners should get some one on one coaching. At the very least, get some video of yourself. Beg, borrow or steal Oscar's list of drills. That's a very comprehensive set of motions. They will find your weak link and root it out like a bad weed.

Thanks Larry. I bet I've watched that Oscar video 100 times over the years. One of my faves.

By attending one of his classes, you will receive a double sided card with the drills that are covered in the class, you can laminate this and take it with you to make sure you don't miss any when practicing them.
