If you've got a towbar on your car, you can put a T bar on it which provides another adjustable height rack at the rear of the car. You don't need to use the sling part, just the rack.

Mine cost a bottle of rum to the welder, the rhino option is rather pricey!

That's alright if you happen to know a welder, I didn't, so I kept the rum for myself! :)

Looks good! Mine is very similar, except it is made of a pair of 6"x5'x1" hardwood boards (weather-proofed) to which I have attached Yakima Mako saddles. The boards are attached to the roof rack bars (round Yakima in my case) with regular Yakima plastic clips and hardware, only using longer bolts through the boards. My setup keeps the boats lower than yours or other V-rack systems.

Thanks! Old photo... Boat is Current Designs Nomad (aka Extreme). Both the boat and the old Prius are gone now, but the rack lives on my newer vehicle and continues to carry surfskis and kayaks.

Here is a slightly bigger version: www.pbase.com/kocho/image/106907342/original.jpg

It is also more versatile than a 1-rail system. I can, without tools, slide one side of the rack as wide as needed to accomodate different widths boats. From a surf ski to a 3-foot wide recreational canoe fit just fine. Long white water boats also fit on top of the saddles, where short ones just lay on the wood part (both without mods compared to carrying a ski or kayak on the rack). So, very convenient.

The attachment is also removable by hand (just remove the Yakima wing nuts). So I can replace the boat carrier with a ski carrier or a bike carrier or just leave the bars bare to cary wood stock for home improvement projects...

Pic 6 is how it attaches to standard roof racks.

Before and after. I made a rack out of light steel girders and 2 spare roof rack bars.

I don't think this will work; there is no place to carry your paddle.

I had some aluminium box and channel welded up and clamped to cross bars to give wider support.
