Hey Rod, my old VHF, also an ICOM, had a removeable battery and, sure enough, eventually the terminals did get some salt water on them and corroded. My fault, I should have been more careful about taking the battery out and drying it.

Having said that, the radio lasted about 6 years before that happened, so I couldn't complain, it had accompanied me on many a downwind!

The new unit seems to have more secure battery system and I'm hoping it will be even less susceptible to leaking...

But rule #1 is switch the damn thing on occasionally to make sure it's still working!

My "waterproof" VHF is in VHF case. I think you are right - the corrosion is more likely to damage it.
