Since I don't use a GPS it's tough for me to figure out my distance and overall speed. This site (and there are others) make it easy to ballpark your training and for mapping out routs. Most of you probably know about these sites but for those that don't, here you go.

Draftlogig is good, but to track your distance and speed, the smartphone app SportsTracker is free for the basic version.

I haven't upgraded to the paid version cause the free features are enough for me. All you need is a smartphone with gps and a dry bag to strap on the back deck.

Check it out

Mapmyride.com is a good one that I use. It's for all elements, including rowing (paddling).

I use map my ride to plan races or training paddles.

Always looking for the next boat :)

Thanks for the link Lakeman. It's a pretty accurate tool.
You could also use Google Earth, which I find easier to use.

I still highly recommend a GPS - they have become so cheap, and will provide much more accurate info than the 'planing at home' will give you. A 1/2 mile difference will have a huge impact on your average speed - especially on shorter distances

Thanks for the other app suggestions. I tried mapmyride and it didn't work without running my data plan. And I don't have a data plan.
I'll trap some others to see if they will just work off the GPS.
