Sharon Armstrong is a highly respected downwind paddler in Durban, South Africa and she often has her GoPro strapped to the back of her ski...  In November, 2017, Durban had some weather - and she headed out for a run from Marine Lifesaving Club to Umhlanga - in 35kt and torrential rain and lightning!  Respect!

The remount is a critical skill - you should practise it often!

7 June 2017, and Cape Town is hit by the strongest storm in decades.  By early afternoon the next day, the winds had dropped, but the massive swell had swung from the southwest to south - which meant that it was wrapping into False Bay.  Multiple Surfski World Series Champion Dawid Mocke and a crew of like-minded paddlers took the opportunity to ride the big waves near Kalk Bay Harbour.

A feature of this year's ICF Ocean Racing World Championships in Hong Kong was the radically improved live coverage - the streaming video feed combined with TracTrac live tracking kept a worldwide audience enthralled.  Canoe Planet posted a bunch of great post-race interviews on their Facebook page, which give fascinating insights from the athletes' point of view...

He's not known as Cory "Chill" Hill for nothing!  This cool customer lead the race from start to finish, never looking anything but commanding.

A grinding upwind into steep chop; a side-on, 2m diagonally-side-on swell that needed huge power to catch, and some smooth, clean runs to the finish… 

After the disappointing weather for the women’s championship on Saturday, the NE monsoon delivered – in spades – on Sunday, 19 Nov for the men’s event of the third ICF Ocean Racing World Championships. 

After a week of monsoon winds and rough seas, race day arrived with the worst possible conditions for the 3^rd ICF Ocean Racing World Championships – windless, flat and muggy… Capricious Mother Nature!  But in racing, you work with what you get, and at least the flat seas offered some reassurance to the less experienced among the competitors.
