Surfski.info runs on an open-source software platform called Joomla. Some while ago, Joomla moved from version 1.0 to 1.5. It’s time for us to follow suit and we’re going to be working on the upgrade over the next couple of days…

No Forum; no comments

Because we have such a massive amount of data on the site (over 1,000 articles at the last count) the sheer volume of content that has to be transferred presents a challenge in its own right.  It will take about three days to move everything across.

We negotiated with the development house that we've employed to do this, to wait until after the Dubai Shamaal and the Southern Shamaal.  But in order to get it done before the Christmas shutdown we have to do the job now.

What does it mean?

In the short term we're limiting the amount of changes that can happen on the site so we're:

  • Switching off comments
  • Switching off the forum
  • Switching off the classified ads

In the long term however, we'll have:

  • A faster back- end.  The whole site should be brisker!
  • A new ad-server that should also speed things up (and make it easier for advertisers to get their stuff up and to see what's happening with their ads)
  • Integration with Facebook - so you'll be able to login with your facebook credentials if you want - and you'll be able to upload your pics, etc through surfski.info.
  • You'll be able to create your own interest groups (training groups, etc) and communicate with them.
  • You'll be able to write your own blogs.
  • We'll be launching a new online shop that will offer Fenn, Epic, Mocke, Shamaal apparel and accessories.

So - it's going to be an exciting time for surfski.info.

There's going to be some chaos at first - of course there is - and I ask for your patience over this period...  but it's going to be worth it.
