This year is the 10th Dolphin Coast Challenge paddled between Zinkwazi and Durban, a distance of 74km over 2 days.

  • Zinkwazi to Salt Rock 32km
  • Salt Rock to Durban 42km

The Coast line at this time of the year is renowned for its strong winds and sometimes sizable swell making for some of the best adrenalin charged downwind conditions on the planet.

Whales and dolphins are plentiful in the warm water along our coast.  The chilled vibe of the region and The Salt Rock Hotel's cool ambiance make for a relaxed atmosphere which no way detracts from the tight racing at the front end of the field.  South Africa's top combinations will be competing for the KZN Double Ski title in all age categories, come 24th & 25th October 2009.

The record for the Zinkwazi - Salt Rock leg is held by Daryl & Bret Bartho, a time of 1hr50min 48sec set in a North East in 2005.  The overall race record is held by Cape Town brothers Dawid & Jasper Mocke with a time of 04hr 22min 51sec set in 2007. Relative new comer Nick Burden and downwind champion Clint Pretorius hold the record for the Salt Rock - Durban leg, time  02hr 24min 36sec.

Ten Year Hat Trick

There are only two paddlers that have completed all 9 previous races, namely Butch Murray and Anton Fouché.  A special 10 year cap will be presented to those who complete 10 races.

If you're keen on "downwind" then this is the time of year to be in KZN, Mouth to Mouth - Richards Bay to Mtinzini as well as DaReal Downwind series make for optimum choice.
