World marathon champ Hank McGregor has confirmed his entry for the 2011 Fenn Cape Point Challenge in Cape Town this weekend

The current Dunlop Durban Surfski World Cup title-holder and national singles and doubles surfski champion has been working hard to get into shape for this unique event that has special sentimental value for him, and vowed to do his utmost to win the title he became the youngest to ever have won a few years ago.

Training hard

“I’ve been training really hard recently. Since I got back from worlds in Singapore I’ve been training every day and I’ve put in some serious mileage over the past couple of weeks,” said McGregor.

“I’m really excited for this year’s race. I certainly haven’t ever been in better shape than I’m in now but racing on the ocean is so unpredictable and you never know what could happen out there so we’ll just have to wait and see how it all pans out,” he added.

Strong competition

With the Discovery Sunglass Hut Surfski Series in the Cape having wrapped up last weekend McGregor realises he will be up against some very strong competition and will have to work extremely hard to overcome many the globe’s top surfski paddlers, all of whom are in incredible form at the moment.

“Obviously Dawid Mocke is an incredible talent and we all know the class he has,” said McGregor. “He will always be right up there and it’s always very special if you do manage to beat him on the ocean!

“However, the youngsters have really upped their game recently and I’m sure they will all be very hungry to get their hands on the title this year.

“Tom Schilperoort, Jasper Mocke, Sean Rice, Grant and Brandon van der Walt have all put their hands up in a big way recently and Sean’s win last year just goes to show what a force these guys are.

“It looks like there will be a really strong field so I’m really looking forward to this year’s race. It should be an absolute cracker,” he added.

Special Event

The Fenn Cape Point Challenge is an event McGregor holds very closely to his heart with some of his finest paddling memories being of this race.

“It’s a very unique race and one which is very special for me,” said McGregor. “As far as I know it’s the only race in the world which takes you across two oceans, Cape Point itself is obviously an incredible landmark to paddle past, the seals and now the sharks which have come into the area add an extra element to it all and of course the sheer distance really makes for a very special event.”

“Having won it with my father when I was just fifteen years old is something I’m still extremely proud of and is one of my favourite paddling memories of all time. It ranks right up there with the best of the best for me and it’s something I will never ever forget!” he added.
